Gameplay
Munich started pressure-packed and created a lot of traffic in front of Maximilian Franzreb, but the Penguins' goalie was on his toes. His counterpart Mathias Niederberger had less work to do until the visitors sent their power play units onto the ice for the first time. Antti Tyrväinen slammed the puck on goal with a direct shot, but the national keeper prevented the Bremerhaven lead with a super save (13.). After that, the duel was even, but without a goal before the first intermission.
Munich dominated in the middle period, Franzreb continued to shine. The goalkeeper first made a spectacular save against Julian Lutz (24.), shortly after had the post on his side (24.) and was then on the spot against Patrick Hager (28.). The Red Bulls pressed and created several top chances, but the goal came from the other side: Ross Mauermann was in the right place in the 29th minute and carried the puck over the line with his skate for 0:1.
The first highlight in the final period belonged to the Penguins, who added to their tally through Markus Vikingstad (42nd). The goal scorer even had a chance for a brace a little later, but Niederberger made a save (45.) and kept his team in the game. The Red Bulls then went forward, but without a goal until the final phase. Don Jackson took a full risk and brought on a sixth player in the 58th minute - with success: Ortega scored with an onetimer to tie the game. Niederberger was on the bench again shortly afterwards, but this time the visitors were jubilant. Vikingstad ensured the decision with his second goal of the game (60.).
