Highlights: Pinguins Bremerhaven vs. EHC Red Bull München (13.10.2024)
Course of the game
Bremerhaven went on the offensive right from the start and put Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger in the spotlight in the opening minutes. After a stormy but unsuccessful opening phase for the hosts, Munich got into the game better. The result: Rieder gave the Red Bulls a deserved lead in the 15th minute after energetic work from Andi Eder, and they took this advantage into the first break.
It took just 43 seconds in the second period for the Munich side to increase their lead to 2:0: Koni Abeltshauser curved around the Penguins goal and fed Ben Smith. But Bremerhaven's reply was not long in coming. Ross Mauermann made it 1:2 in the 22nd minute, after which both teams continued to create a number of good opportunities. However, the Red Bulls scored the next goal. First, Brooks scored on a counter-attack alone in front of Penguins goalkeeper Maximilian Franzreb (31.), then Rieder once again put the puck over the line to make it 4:1 for Munich (32.). This was the score going into the second break.
Max Kaltenhauser's team initially kept Bremerhaven at bay in the final period before Jan Urbas surprisingly reduced the deficit to 2:4 (45.). Shortly afterwards, the Penguins even managed to score the equalizer through Miha Verlic in the power play (47.). However, the Red Bulls regained control of the game with disciplined defensive work. With 2:15 minutes remaining, Bremerhaven took the goalkeeper off the ice, brought on a sixth outfield player and actually scored the equalizer through Alexander Friesen twelve seconds before the final buzzer. This was followed by an overtime period without goals and a penalty shoot-out. Filip Varejcka secured the extra point for EHC Red Bull Munich.
