Course of the match
Dominant, full of pressure, highly dangerous - the Red Bulls started the match at full throttle. Because the DEG also created chances quickly, it could have been 2:2 after just three minutes. But although Munich's attack and Düsseldorf's counter-attacks continued apace, no goals were scored in the first period. Also because Mathias Niederberger in the Red Bulls' goal and the visitors' goalkeeper Henrik Haukeland were on top form. The score was 0-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period also began with a lot of forward movement and two strong goalies. And it brought the first goal: Tyler Angle smashed the puck into the short corner of Munich's net in the 25th minute to make it 1:0 for the visitors. The Red Bulls then pressed for the equalizer. Düsseldorf fought back doggedly even in three short-handed situations and managed to hold on to the narrow lead into the second period break.
Munich stepped up the pressure in the final period, but the DEG bulwark held firm. Until the 53rd minute: Düsseldorf defended while short-handed, Eisenschmid unleashed a powerful shot and the SAP Garden cheered as the score remained 1:1 until the end of normal time. This was followed by a goalless five minutes of overtime, in which Niederberger made several great saves, and the penalty shoot-out. Alexander Ehl (65.) decided the game in DEG's favour.
