Course of the match
Munich set the tone right from the start in their first home game of the year, but the ice-cold Frankfurters were celebrating in the seventh minute. Cameron Brace buried the visitors' first shot on goal to make it 0:1 (7'). However, the Red Bulls were not impressed. They stuck to their game plan. This paid off in the twelfth minute when Krämmer scored to make it 1:1 after preparatory work by Butcher. Because Löwen goalkeeper Juho Olkinuora then made strong saves and Dennis Lobach scored out of nothing (17th), the Hessians went into the first break with a narrow 2:1 lead after just three shots on goal.
Kaltenhauser changed the goalkeeper before the middle period: DEL debutant Christopher Kolarz replaced Mathias Niederberger in Munich's goal. The duel was now more even - with one difference: the Red Bulls were more efficient and turned the game around. First, birthday boy Butcher equalized the score at 2:2 (25'). It was the 200th point of his DEL career for assistant Markus Eisenschmid. Dauber put the home side ahead for the first time in the 29th minute. Ehliz even increased the lead to 4:2 shortly before the second break (39').
When Varejcka added the fifth goal in the final period (44'), there was much to suggest that the Red Bulls would win. But the Lions did not give up. Coach Tom Rowe took goalkeeper Olkinuora off the ice for the first time 9:20 minutes before the end of the game in favor of a sixth outfield player. That paid off immediately. Carter Rowney reduced the deficit seconds later with a follow-up shot (51'). The visitors now launched their final offensive - and celebrated again: Daniel Pfaffengut made it 4:5 (56') to keep the tension high in the SAP Garden. The Lions tried again with six outfield players, but this time Munich's defense withstood the pressure. The score remained 5:4 and with it the Red Bulls' first win in 2025.
