Course of the game
The Red Bulls got off to a strong start. First, the champions survived a shorthanded situation, then they went towards the Grizzlies goal with a lot of speed and enthusiasm. The reward was the 1:0 through Blum in the fourth minute. Wolfsburg responded with a short spell of offense before things got going again at the other end. Abeltshauser converted one of the chances to make it 2:0 (10th minute). The pressure continued, but Ryan O'Connor reduced the deficit for Wolfsburg via a counter-attack (14'). However, the visitors had the perfect answer: Eisenschmid increased the lead to 3:1 (15') after a top combination - which was also the score at the first break.
Wolfsburg got off to the better start in the middle period. Spencer Machacek scored to make it 2:3 (22') and give his team a tailwind. The Grizzlies had the best chance to equalize in overtime, but Luis Schinko missed the wide-open goal (31'). After that it was up and down, but despite good chances there was no further goal before the second break.
Munich reached operating temperature more quickly in the final period. Coach Söderholm's team played forward and kept the game away from their own goal. DeSousa narrowly missed making it 4:2 (45') before Wolfsburg became dangerous for the first time through Darren Archibald (46'). After that, there were no top chances. It was only in the final phase that things got dicey again for the visitors: Wolfsburg pressed for the equalizer in the powerplay with a sixth outfield player, but Mathias Niederberger shone between the posts and held on to the three points for the Red Bulls.
