Both teams focused on a stable defense, until the sixth minute there was little happening in front of the goals. Then Ingolstadt's Wojciech Stachowiak took advantage of the first top-class chance to make it 0:1. The Red Bulls' answer: an increase in tempo, which was rewarded with the 1:1 by Smith (10.). Munich now pressed, but Ingolstadt with a power play. Frederik Storm deflected to give the opponent the lead again (16.). This didn't last long, however, as Schütz pushed the puck over the line to make it 2:2 shortly before the first period break (20.).
Ingolstadt started the middle period with a power play, the Red Bulls prevented any noteworthy opportunities - and had a huge chance through Hager shortly after the penalty expired (23rd). Afterwards, the Panthers pushed for the third goal. Despite promising chances, however, no goal was scored, Mathias Niederberger was on the spot. And then Hager had a flash of inspiration: The Munich captain shot at Mathew Bodie in such a way that he deflected the puck into his own goal (37th).
The opponent came out of the dressing room with a lot of momentum and were initially the more active team in the final period. Daniel Pietta knocked the puck against the crossbar (45th) - Munich was lucky in this situation, but subsequently also had good opportunities like Street's (48th). The Red Bulls wanted the decision, Ingolstadt increased the risk - and turned the game with goals from Stachowiak (55th) and Tye McGinn (56th). Munich pressed for the equalizer with the sixth field player, but it was not to come.
