Course of play
The Red Bulls started off with a lot of pressure and created opportunities. Grizzlys goalie Hannibal Weitzmann was often the focal point, his counterpart Mathias Niederberger only occasionally. Although the team from Munich managed to get stuck in Wolfsburg's third several times, they were unable to score. Maximilian Kastner had the best chance three seconds before the siren, but was unable to finish in front of Weitzmann. As the visitors also failed to score, the score remained 0-0 at the first break.
Weitzmann also had to save a top chance for Munich from Jonathon Blum (22') in the middle period. After that, Wolfsburg were more attack-minded and Niederberger was called upon more often than in the first 20 minutes. Although the Red Bulls became more dangerous again towards the end of the third period, the visitors took the lead through Gerrit Fauser (37') while short-handed. However, the champions struck back before the break: Oswald celebrated his first play-off goal in the DEL after a pass from captain Patrick Hager (40'). The teams went into the dressing room with the score at 1:1.
Hager opened the final period with a solo run, which resulted in no goal after video evidence (42'). It was a different story in minute 46: Varejcka was served the puck perfectly by Maximilian Daubner and converted to make it 2:1 for Munich. The Red Bulls then kept the pressure on and were closer to a third goal than Wolfsburg were to an equalizer. The Grizzlies brought on a sixth outfield player with just under two minutes remaining. But EHC Red Bull München defended their lead with aplomb and booked their seventh semi-final appearance in the German Ice Hockey League with their fourth win in their fourth quarter-final match.
