Course of the game
Wolfsburg started with a lot of momentum, the Red Bulls were initially challenged in defense. In the third minute of the game, the Grizzlies had a free shot and Matthew White made the most of the chance to make it 1:0. Munich responded to the goal with a period of pressure. This resulted in good opportunities, but Hannibal Weitzmann in the Lower Saxony goal could not be beaten at first. The duel remained intense and fast-paced, with both teams having good moves in attack. Chris DeSousa popped up in front of Weitzmann in the 14th minute, but he once again prevented the equalizer (14th). The teams went into the first break with a narrow deficit.
Wolfsburg also quickly found their rhythm in the middle period before the Red Bulls took control and were rewarded for it: Almquist made it 1:1 on his comeback after a long injury break (24'). Munich did not let up after that and even stepped up a gear. The Grizzlies defense was now under constant pressure - and Weitzmann was beaten again in the 28th minute. Hager, who had already scored in the first two duels, put his colors ahead for the first time. But that wasn't all: in the 38th minute, the captain added another with his powerplay goal to make it 3:1 and put the finishing touches to a strong third for the German champions.
Wolfsburg reduced the deficit to 2:3 out of nowhere in the third period through Justin Feser (46'). The hosts now had the momentum, but Munich's Street ended the period of pressure just two minutes later with the 4:2. As Weitzmann saved the solo efforts of Nico Krämmer (51') and Yasin Ehliz (56'), it remained exciting. In the 57th minute, the Wolfsburg goalkeeper went off the ice in favor of the extra outfield player. And with the extra attacker, the Lower Saxons reduced the deficit once more, but Andy Miele's final goal 17 seconds before the final buzzer came too late.
