Course of the game
The fourth semi-final got off to the worst possible start for Munich. First the big counter-attack chance for the Red Bulls (2.), then three goals for Bremerhaven by Ross Mauermann (2.) as well as Christian Wejse (5.) and Jan Urbas (6.) each in the powerplay. But the champions found their first answer: Blum smashed the puck into the net from the blue line to make it 1:3 (10th). The home side then pressed for the second goal, while the Penguins waited for counter-attacking opportunities. However, neither team was able to score. The score at the break: 3:1 for Bremerhaven.
The Red Bulls continued to work meticulously for another goal in the middle period, while the visitors lurked for the chance to counter-attack. In the 28th minute, the time had come: Patrick Hager played a perfect pass to DeSousa, who scored the equalizer for Munich from close range. And they continued to step on the gas. Penguins goalie Kristers Gudlevskis now had to repeatedly show all his class and his teammates were only able to provide some relief when they were outnumbered. However, no more goals were scored. Bremerhaven went into the dressing room for the second time with a 3:2 lead.
In the final period, the teams initially met at eye level. Munich then increased the pressure ten minutes before the end of the period. Gudlevskis was repeatedly the center of attention and the equalizer was in the air. However, it would not come - and the clock was ticking. Munich goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger prevented Bremerhaven from scoring a fourth goal in the 59th minute. 45.8 seconds before the final buzzer, the Red Bulls had a 6-on-4 advantage. However, the Penguins managed to hold on to their lead and cut the deficit to 3:1 in the best-of-seven series.
