Course of the game
In a fast-paced opening period, Bremerhaven created the first top chance, but Niederberger reacted brilliantly after a cross-ice pass to Ross Mauermann (3rd). At the other end, Penguins goalkeeper Kristers Gudlevskis allowed himself a bad pass. Abeltshauser did not hesitate for long and put Munich ahead (7'). The Red Bulls were now really well in the game and had the next big opportunity, but this time Gudlevskis showed all his class against Markus Eisenschmid (9'). The game continued with tough duels and overpaying situations on both sides. However, the attentive defensive formations allowed little to happen. And so it remained 1:0 for the German champions after 20 minutes.
Munich's power ice hockey continued in the middle period. In the 25th minute, the Red Bulls were rewarded for their strong performance: Maximilian Daubner crossed at just the right moment for Parkes, who netted to make it 2:0. Parkes had a great chance to double his tally in overtime, but his follow-up shot just missed the goal (29'). Two minutes later, Niederberger had to intervene for the first time in the second period. The Penguins now pushed on, but coach Söderholm's team survived the brief period of pressure and went into the second break with a 2-0 lead after a strong third period.
Bremerhaven invested a lot in the final period, the Red Bulls continued to defend with concentration - without forgetting their offense. Veit Oswald had another great chance for Munich (45') before the Penguins became dangerous: Christian Wejse hit the post (51st) and missed free standing a few seconds later (52nd). However, the winners of the first round were then awarded a penalty and the Red Bulls took advantage of the overtime situation through Kastner, who made it 3:0 (53'). Bremerhaven coach Thomas Popiesch reacted and brought on a sixth outfield player four-and-a-half minutes before the final buzzer - to no avail: DeSousa sealed the deal with an empty-net goal to make it 4:0 (58').
