Course of the game
That's what you call a dream start: after just 21 seconds, DeSousa scored from the slot to make it 1:0 for the Red Bulls. But the visitors from Straubing replied quickly. Skyler McKenzie equalized from close range in the third minute. Both teams continued to play forward after that. Munich had the better chances and thus deserved to take the lead again. After gaining possession at the blue line, Eisenschmid confidently slotted home (8'). Coach Kaltenhauser's team then created a few more chances, but the goal came from the other side: Marcel Müller put the puck into the Munich net to make it 2:2 at the break (18').
In the middle period, the Red Bulls successfully defended themselves against a three-and-a-half-minute Powerplay by the guests and then had to accept the third goal from Taylor Leier from a scramble (27th). The Lower Bavarians, strong away from home, were now very self-confident. Munich gave everything to fight their way back into the match, but conceded Straubing's fourth goal through Tim Brunnhuber one minute before the siren and went into the dressing room trailing 2:4.
The home side began the final 20 minutes with the advantage, but failed to score a quick goal. Instead, Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger made several excellent saves when the Tigers had opportunities. His counterpart Florian Bugl also made a strong save. When the clock reached 55:54 minutes, the Red Bulls brought on a sixth outfield player - to no avail. Straubing left nothing to chance in the heated final minutes, scoring Michael Connolly's empty-net goal to make it 5:2 and put the lid on the game.
