Course of the game
Both teams got off to a concentrated and controlled start. Munich increased the pressure after five minutes and subsequently created their first chances. However, Nürnberg also showed flashes of class in attack. The home side were able to celebrate for the first time in the 12th minute when Ehliz beat Niklas Treutle in the Ice Tigers' goal. And just three minutes later, Hirose made it 2:0 for the Red Bulls in overtime. Nürnberg responded quickly: Jeremy McKenna reduced the deficit in the 17th minute in the power play - the score was 2:1 after 20 minutes.
In the middle period, the visitors even managed to equalize after just two minutes. William Graber fired the puck into the net from the air to make it 2:2. The spectators saw an even match with few opportunities on both sides. They did not see any more goals until the second buzzer. The teams went into the dressing room with the score at 2:2.
The four-time German champions started the final period with plenty of possession, but the Ice Tigers scored the next goal. Cole Maier made it 3:2 for the Franken (45'). After that, Nürnberg's defense had its work cut out for it as Munich pressed hard for the equalizer - with success. Five minutes later, Varejcka gave the excellent Treutle no chance after preparatory work by Nikolaus Heigl. The Red Bulls wanted more and laid siege to the visitors' goal, but no further goals were scored in regulation time. The game went into overtime, in which Marcus Weber (63.) scored the decisive goal for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers.
