Course of the game
The Red Bulls were missing five forwards for this game: In addition to Trevor Parkes, Nikolaus Heigl, Nico Krämmer and Veit Oswald, captain Patrick Hager also missed the game. Simon Wolf started in goal. The youngster initially had little to do on his DEL debut, as the players in front of him defended with concentration. Nevertheless, it was dangerous once when Louis-Marc Aubry deflected a shot onto the crossbar (4.). Munich created more chances, but lacked accuracy. At the other end, Cologne's Justin Schütz completed a solo run to make it 0:1 (13.). The lead lasted until the 19th minute, when Hirose equalized to make it 1:1 - the score at the first period break.
It was a similar picture in the middle period: scoring chances were initially in short supply. In the 25th minute, Wolf was able to make an excellent catch against Gregor MacLeod. The Munich goalkeeper now moved more into the spotlight and made further good saves. However, he had no chance against Josh Currie's solo effort (31.). As Cologne goalkeeper Julius Hudacek thwarted a top chance from Andreas Eder (36.), among other things, the score remained 1:2 after 40 minutes.
Speed, intensity and a total of seven goals - the final period was a rollercoaster of emotions. Alexandre Grenier got the visitors off to a dream start with his power-play goal (42.). The post prevented the Red Bulls' perfect reply through Eder (43.). Then came the hour of Munich's powerplay: In the 47th minute, DeSousa finished off Adam Brooks' impressive preparatory work before Eisenschmid hammered a Lancaster pass into the net (49.) - 3:3. It continued in quick succession: Schütz scored Cologne's fourth goal (50.) and Smith equalized again (52.). But three minutes later, the Haie fans were able to cheer again: It was Schütz again who put his team ahead. A long Munich final offensive followed, but this time the Red Bulls did not come back. Twelve seconds before the final buzzer, Schütz put the lid on it with an empty-net goal - the final score was 4:6.
