Course of the match
High tempo, tough tackles and good chances - the top match lived up to its name. Munich were initially more dangerous and went ahead in the fourth minute: Eder converted a solo effort after a pass from Konrad Abeltshauser to make it 1:0. The Red Bulls survived the subsequent period of pressure from the Eisbären thanks to great commitment and strong saves from Mathias Niederberger. Among other things, the German international goalkeeper made a spectacular save against Leo Pföderl (7th). Berlin also had more of the play afterwards, but Niederberger and the post prevented the equalizer. At the other end, Jonas Stettmer defused Chris DeSousa's chance (15). So it remained 1:0 after 20 minutes.
There were two early penalties for Berlin in the middle period (22., 24.) Munich knew how to take advantage of these and struck ice-cold in the powerplay: Rieder increased the lead to 2:0 (24') after Adam Brooks' assist. The Red Bulls continued with great momentum and controlled the game. The Eisbären initially had no major opportunities. After Zach Boychuk's chance (29.), however, the visitors got back into the game better. An open exchange of blows developed with good chances on both sides. Frederik Tiffels capitalized on one of them to score the equalizer (34.). Because Brooks was decisively interrupted at the last moment at the other end (39.), Munich went into the second break with a 2:1 lead.
Berlin upped the tempo in the final period, with Munich now under pressure. The visitors were rewarded in the 47th minute: Boychuk deflected in a power play to make it 2:2. The Eisbären were then closer to scoring a third goal. After Ty Ronning's shot, the post saved the strong Niederberger for the second time (54.). Shortly afterwards, Stettmer defused a solo effort from Markus Eisenschmid (56.). The visitors did better almost on the counter-attack: Ronning scored to make it 3:2 (57.) for Berlin. A short time later, the Red Bulls' first defeat of the season was sealed.
