Top ice hockey, show acts and lots of emotion: this is how the Grand Opening Game went// OPENING GAMEThe day after: On Friday evening, the SAP Garden was officially opened with a game between EHC Red Bull Munich and the NHL team Buffalo Sabres. These were the highlights of the historic event.

Both teams played top-class ice hockey in front of 10,796 spectators. And there was also plenty to see and discover off the ice at the premiere of our new home.

1,719 days after construction began, the doors of the sold-out SAP Gardens finally opened for the first time at 6.30 pm on Friday. And the crowd was huge, as was the amazement.

Ice hockey fans strolled enthusiastically around the stadium and took in their first impressions of the new multifunctional arena in the Olympiapark, while some others stocked up on exclusive Grand Opening merchandise in the fan stores. Hungry and thirsty spectators explored the wide range of catering options, while gamers paid a visit to the new Gaming Garden. In short: a colourful programme for everyone.

Ice hockey spectacle at the Grand Opening Game

Ice hockey was also played, of course. And how! The Red Bulls and the Buffalo Sabres put on an ice hockey festival in front of numerous personalities from politics and sport - including Joachim Herrmann (Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, Sport and Integration), Dieter Reiter (Lord Mayor of the City of Munich), Germany's record-breaking national football player Lothar Matthäus and many more.

Am Ende mussten sich die Jungs von Trainer Toni Söderholm, die phasenweise sehr gut gegen das Spitzenteam aus der besten Liga der Welt mithielten, mit 0:5 geschlagen geben. Das tat der Stimmung an diesem für den Club und die Stadt München denkwürdigen Abend allerdings keinen Abbruch.
