Course of the match
Shortly before the start of the match, a minute's silence was held in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack in Munich. Afterwards, the game started with the Red Bulls eager to play and they were rewarded for their powerful play for the first time in the fifth minute: Ehliz dusted off in superior numbers to make it 1:0 (5th). The pressure on Thomas Greiss' goal continued and Munich pressed for the next goal. The Löwen goalkeeper thwarted further top chances, but in the 19th minute he was again without a chance. Eder increased the lead to 2:0 with a well-placed shot - the score after 20 minutes.
Frankfurt were able to break free more often in the middle period, but the Red Bulls' superiority did not change. Jackson's team consistently stuck to its game plan and went one better in the 33rd minute: A few seconds after Veit Oswald had hit the post, Kastner finished off a dream combination with Nico Krämmer to make it 3:0. The Lions then reduced the deficit out of nowhere through Markus Schweiger (37), but Munich were not to be deterred. Hager restored the gap with his goal to make it 4:1 (38') and ensure a three-goal lead after two periods.
The Red Bulls initially allowed little to happen in the final period. As Cameron Brace capitalized on the visitors' first good chance of the third period (49'), the game really picked up again. Frankfurt now launched the final offensive and created further opportunities, but Ehliz put a damper on the Lions with his goal to make it 5:2 (53') - and also wrote club history. Shortly afterwards, Daniel Pfaffengut brought the Hessen back to within two goals (56'), but Munich's eleventh win against Frankfurt was no longer in danger.
