Course of the game
Disciplined defensive work was initially the trump card. For six minutes there was hardly any scoring. Then the Red Bulls sent their overnumbered units onto the ice for the first time. A goal was missing, but Munich set the tone - until the first top chance of the Czechs by Kamil Walega (13.). Niederberger saved brilliantly with his catching hand. Třinec was now more offensive and had two chances on the power play, but Niederberger and the post (16th, 20th) stood in the way of a goal.
The Red Bulls after the change of ends with very good penalty killing. In the five-on-five, both teams were now more offensive, the goalkeepers consequently moved into the spotlight. Niederberger saved strongly against Patrik Hrehorčák (28th), his counterpart Marek Mazanec thwarted top opportunities like the double chance of Chris DeSousa and Jonathon Blum (29th). In the final phase of the third, Munich shifted up another gear, but even after 40 minutes it remained a goalless draw.
In the final period, it was the same picture: The Red Bulls were forced to play two shorthanded periods - and again they survived the strong power play of the Czechs without conceding a goal. Afterwards, coach Söderholm's team increased the pressure. At first without success, because Mazanec also shone against Ben Smith (49th). A little later, the keeper was beaten for the first time. McKiernan scored a goal of will to give Munich the lead. The German champion defended this offensively. In the penultimate minute, Eder put the lid on it with his empty-net goal for 2:0 (58.).
