Course of the game
Both teams went into forward gear in the first period. Mathias Niederberger in the Red Bulls' goal initially had strong scenes, while his counterpart Cody Brenner increasingly took center stage from the tenth minute onwards. The Lions goalkeeper prevented them from falling behind several times - including when Munich were outnumbered by Markus Eisenschmid (14th). Brenner was then beaten four minutes later: Abeltshauser popped up in front of the goal after a fine assist from Maximilian Kastner and scored to make it 1:0. The teams went into the first break with this result.
Frankfurt turned the game around in the middle period - also because the Red Bulls played short-handed for a long time. First Cameron Brace put the puck under the crossbar to make it 1:1 (24'), before Julian Napravnik made it 2:1 for the Lions in double overtime (31'). The lead only lasted two minutes, however, as Eder finished off a solo run to make it 2:2. Both teams then had chances. Dominik Bokk capitalized on one of them to give Frankfurt the lead again (39'). Because Brenner reacted strongly against Ben Smith at the other end a little later, the Lions went into the second period break with a narrow lead.
The Red Bulls tried hard in the final period, but Frankfurt defended their lead until the final phase. Söderholm then put all his eggs in one basket. During a power play, the Munich coach brought on an extra outfield player - with success: DeSousa equalized three seconds before the end of regulation time, forcing overtime.
Munich set the tone in overtime, but no goal was scored. The penalty shoot-out had to decide. Daniel Pfaffengut converted the decisive attempt to give Frankfurt the tournament victory.
