Course of play
The Grizzlies started the match energetically. However, Munich were not impressed and created the first opportunities early on. Wolfsburg goalie Dustin Strahlmeier had to show his skills several times. In the 10th minute, however, he had no chance: captain Hager grabbed the puck in front of the goal and scored to make it 1:0 for the Red Bulls. Even after this goal, the strong champions kept up the pressure and Strahlmeier had his hands full. Things then got heated in the final phase of the opening period. Result: lots of penalties, no more goals - at the break it was 1:0 for Munich.
The middle period brought the equalizer after just 36 seconds: Ryan O'Connor scored from the blue line to make it 1:1 for the Grizzlies (21st). Shortly afterwards, Wolfsburg also took advantage of the second power play when Matthew White put the disc in the Munich goal (24'). But the visitors' 2:1 lead did not last long. Krämmer tunneled Strahlmeier less than a minute later to make it 2:2 (25'). And Wolfsburg struck back again. This time Gerrit Fauser was delighted to make it 3:2 in the 29th minute. After that, the match became more disjointed, with both teams initially less determined to find the opposing goal. Until Munich struck twice shortly before the end of the third: First Kastner crowned a top combination in superior possession with the 3:3 (38'), then Parkes added a farmer's trick to make it 4:3 at the break (39').
The final period began with Munich creating chances by the minute. The next goal for the Red Bulls was in the air and it came in the 48th minute. DeSousa made it 5:3 from close range in the power play, followed 26 seconds later by a double strike from Parkes to make it 6:3. Strahlmeier left his goal six minutes before the end and Krämmer made it 7:3 (55') shortly afterwards with his second goal of the evening, the decider and the final score. Champions Red Bull Munich thus take a 2-0 series lead into the third game of this quarter-final duel in Wolfsburg on Friday.
