Course of the game
The Red Bulls started their last away game in 2024 with a great deal of defensive work to do. The Ice Tigers were lucky in the fourth minute when Chris DeSousa only hit the post. A huge chance - and not the last good Munich opportunity in the first period, but the goals came from the other side. Cole Maier gave the home side the lead as if out of nowhere. Just 28 seconds later, Ryan Stoa gave Nürnberg a 2:0 lead in the power play (18th minute). That was the score going into the first break.
After the break, the Ice Tigers initially had more of an advantage - partly due to another power play. However, the post and talented goalkeeper Simon Wolf stood in the way of the Franconians' third goal before the Red Bulls were able to shift up another gear. Niklas Treutle now took center stage again. The Nürnberg goalkeeper defused tricky situations such as Les Lancaster's finish (34') and played a big part in ensuring that a varied period ended without a goal.
Nürnberg pulled back in the final third and waited for counter-attacks. The plan worked when Hayden Shaw made it 3:0 (46'). Kastner reduced the deficit with a dream goal for the Red Bulls (51') and the game became exciting once again. The Red Bulls kept on attacking and tried the extra attacker from the penultimate minute onwards - to no avail, as Maier finally sealed the deal with an empty-net goal 31 seconds before the final buzzer to make it 4:1.
