Course of the game
Ingolstadt put a lot of pressure on Mathias Niederberger's goal right from the start. The logical consequence was the opening goal by Charles Bertrand, who deflected in an unstoppable shot to make it 1:0. The Red Bulls then invested more in offense, but Devin Williams defused the first dangerous shots on his goal. After eleven minutes, the special teams were allowed to prove themselves: First, Munich sent its powerplay formations onto the ice, but neither in this situation nor shortly afterwards during a double overtime by ERC Ingolstadt was another goal scored. Because Niederberger shone twice in the final minute of the third period, the league leaders went into the break with a narrow lead.
After the break, the home side kept up the pressure before the Red Bulls developed more of an attack. At five-on-five, Kaltenhauser's team were too playful at times, but the equalizer was in the air during an almost four-minute powerplay (from the 31st minute). Munich had to wait until shortly before the end of the third period for their first goal. Seven seconds before the siren, Butcher tied the score at 1:1 with a concealed shot, his first DEL goal for the NHL-experienced defender.
Ingolstadt also set the tone in the final period - and took the lead again after Philipp Krauß scored (42'). The Red Bulls continued to play patiently. That paid off in the 50th minute, when Kastner scored to make it 2:2 after a remarkable assist from Andreas Eder. The intensity was now reminiscent of playoff ice hockey. Munich was closer to the three points in the intense final phase, but nothing changed in regulation time.
Despite top chances on both sides, no decision was made in a highlight-packed extra time. The penalty shoot-out was in no way inferior to overtime. Daniel Schmölz secured the extra point for ERC Ingolstadt.
