Course of the game
Both teams started the match in a very controlled manner. There were only a few scoring opportunities at first. In the eighth minute, Ehliz gave the more active Red Bulls a 1:0 lead. Munich remained more dangerous than Köln after that and Varejcka consequently increased the lead to 2:0 at the break (16').
In the middle period, the Red Bulls applied a lot of pressure from the start and the Haie rarely got in front of Mathias Niederberger's goal. However, despite a number of Munich opportunities, the visitors were still 2-0 up after 40 minutes.
In the first two minutes of the final period, the Red Bulls had to make do with one man less on the ice: Josh Currie reduced the deficit to 1:2 for Cologne (42'). The teams now played an even match. Niederberger made several very good saves, but twelve seconds before the end he had to let Justin Schütz's deflected shot pass. However, there was no overtime: DeSousa scored 0.2 seconds before the siren to give EHC Red Bull München a 3:2 victory.
