Course of the game
Both teams defended hard and consistently in the opening period, so the fans had to wait for the first chance. After just under nine minutes, DeSousa tested Eisbären goalie Jonas Stettmer for the first time in the power play. After the penalty expired, the Berliners invested more in offense, but Mathias Niederberger was initially out of reach. The Munich goalkeeper then had no chance in the 19th minute. Frederik Tiffels converted the second follow-up shot to give the second-placed team a 1:0 lead at the break.
After the break, both teams bridged the neutral zone faster than in the first period. The duel picked up speed. The Red Bulls now had more chances to score, but Berlin continued to concede little. When the Eisbären became more offensive, Munich struck. Outnumbered, Daubner finished off a counter-attack to make it 1:1 (37'). It stayed that way until the second break.
The Eisbären started the final period with one man more, but Munich did not allow much and then went into forward gear. With success: Taro Hirose set up Ehliz, who put the puck past Stettmer to make it 2:1 (43'). The lead did not last long, however, as Ty Ronning made it 2:2 in the 49th minute. Both teams then played with an open goal. The Red Bulls were closer to victory after 60 minutes, but no further goals were scored in regulation time.
Hirose had the best chance in extra time, but the crossbar prevented the Munich striker from scoring a magical goal (64'). In the penalty shootout, DeSousa secured the extra point for the Red Bulls.
