Course of the game
The game got off to a spectacular start with the Grizzlies hitting the crossbar after just 30 seconds. Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger was also at the center of attention shortly afterwards. But after Wolfsburg's brief initial offensive, the Red Bulls took the initiative and took the lead through Hirose (4th). Further chances followed for the four-time champions, who added to their lead in the twelfth minute after a dream combination by DeSousa. They went into the first break with this 2:0 lead.
In the middle period, Wolfsburg scored the equalizer out of nowhere through Jimmy Martinovic (25'). Munich initially responded with further opportunities, but the hosts also repeatedly appeared dangerous in front of Niederberger. Over the course of the third period, the Grizzlys then managed to fight off longer periods of pressure, but no more goals were scored. The score at the second break was 2:1 for the Red Bulls.
Just under four minutes into the final period, Munich had their first overtime opportunity - and DeSousa made the most of it. He increased the lead to 3:1 with his second goal of the evening (45') and was also able to celebrate his 100th DEL goal. The Red Bulls not only defended this lead with aplomb, but also created more chances than their opponents. When Wolfsburg goalkeeper Dustin Strahlmeier left the ice for a sixth outfield player, Varejcka captured the disc and maneuvered it into the empty net to make it 4:1 (58').
