Course of the game
The Red Bulls created the first good opportunities in an evenly poised opening period. Frankfurt remained without a notable shot until the eighth minute, but then struck coldly in the powerplay: Markus Schweiger deflected the puck into the net to make it 1:0. Mathias Niederberger saved his team from conceding another goal with brilliant saves in the ensuing pressure phase of the Hessians. Towards the end of the first period, the Red Bulls narrowly missed out on equalizing, partly because Löwen goalie Jussi Olkinuora made two strong saves against Taro Hirose (20th). Frankfurt went into the first break with a narrow lead.
Both teams started the middle period with their sights wide open before the special teams took center stage: One penalty time followed the next. Tobias Rieder's game was over in the 23rd minute due to injury, but his teammates pressed for the equalizer shortly afterwards in double overtime. DeSousa scored shortly after the first penalty time had expired (25'). The special teams were also in demand afterwards. The playful Red Bulls created numerous top chances, but the goal came from the other side: Cameron Brace's powerplay goal (37') gave Frankfurt a 2:1 lead after 40 minutes.
The final period got off to a furious start with two goals in the first minute of the third period: Carter Proft opened the scoring for the Lions, but Brooks struck back for Munich just 14 seconds later (41'). The Canadian surprised Olkinuora with a shot from the halfway line. The Red Bulls now had the upper hand. The equalizer was in the air, but Cedric Schiemenz converted a solo effort to make it 4:2 (51'). Munich did not give up, however, and Ehliz brought them back to within one goal (54'). In the tense final phase, Kaltenhauser brought on a sixth outfield player early on - with success: Eder scored to make it 4:4 (59') - overtime.
Both goalkeepers shone in overtime. The penalty shootout had to decide the game. Eder scored the extra point for the Red Bulls.
