Course of the game
The fans in the sold-out Curt-Frenzel-Stadion witnessed an intense duel with hard checks and a lot of offensive drive. Augsburg had the first top chance through Anthony Louis (8th), but the Red Bulls were the more dangerous team in the first period. Rieder took advantage of one of these opportunities in the 13th minute. Shortly afterwards, the former NHL player completed Munich's double strike in the power play (15th). The pressure on Strauss Mann's goal continued, but thanks to Cody Kunyk's powerplay goal, the Panthers reduced the deficit to 1:2 before the first break.
The action continued in the middle period. Munich got off to the better start - also because Yasin Ehliz turned up the heat. The international striker hit the post shortly after the restart (21st), before setting up Hirose for the 3:1 (25th). However, the Panthers refused to be shaken off and came back to within one goal through Riley McCourt (26'). It was a wild and entertaining game in which the Red Bulls invested more - and were able to celebrate once more before the second break: Kastner scored to make it 4:2 (31.) before things quietened down in front of goal. The Jackson team went into the dressing room with a two-goal lead.
The calm soon came to an end in the final period. Mick Köhler left Mathias Niederberger with no chance with a concealed shot (42') - and increased the tension. The final goal gave the Panthers a boost and Munich now had to defend a lot. But when the equalizer was in the air, Rieder struck for the third time that evening (52'). The 5:3 was also the end of Augsburg's period of pressure. The Red Bulls then took control of the game and safely held on to their lead.
