Course of the match
It didn't take long for both teams to get their bearings. After five minutes, Munich applied a lot of pressure in the first power play of the derby and sniffed at the lead. But Panther goalkeeper Strauss Mann made a brilliant save against Maximilian Kastner (5th). The score remained 0:0 until the ninth minute, when Nicholas Baptiste took precise aim in the power play to make it 1:0 for Augsburg. Donald D.J. Busdeker added the home side's second goal in the 14th minute. The Red Bulls were now under pressure - and responded strongly. The reward was the equalizer by Varejcka (17'). An equalizer was even possible, but Augsburg saved the 2:1 lead going into the first break.
One minute into the second period, the Panthers were celebrating for the third time - but too early. The video evidence showed that Mathias Niederberger had steered the puck onto the crossbar. It remained the last AEV chance for a long time, as the Red Bulls then stepped up the pace and turned the game around with a double strike: DeSousa equalized with a shot into the corner in the power play (26'), before Blum put Munich in front just two minutes later. Kaltenhauser's team did not concede much after that. Nevertheless, the game turned again: Thomas Jordan Trevelyan in overtime (36') and Thomas Schemitsch (39') scored to give Augsburg a 4:3 lead after 40 minutes.
The special teams were also allowed to show off after the second period - but despite good chances in the power play on both sides, the score remained the same. The Panthers defended their lead until the 51st minute. Munich defender Butcher surprised AEV goalkeeper Mann and equalized for the Red Bulls. In the final phase, the visitors wanted the win more, but the Panthers defended consistently. Just as everyone was getting ready for overtime, DeSousa struck for the second time that evening. With his goal 15 seconds before the final buzzer, the Munich goal scorer became the match winner.
