‘heinemann's Road to SAP Garden’ - Episode 3: this is how sustainable the SAP Garden is // NEWSThe final spurt towards the opening of the SAP Garden has begun. In the third episode of heinemann's ROAD TO SAP GARDEN, the electrical engineering company specialising in technical building equipment shows how sustainably the SAP Garden has been designed.
Despite the high energy requirements, particularly for the ice technology, attention was paid from the outset to a functional and efficient design of construction and operation using innovative technologies. As a result, the total energy consumption of SAP Gardens, including its four ice rinks, is comparable to other sports arenas of this size without energy-intensive ice rinks. This is ensured by energy-efficient construction and operating concepts and the versatile use of the multifunctional sports arena.

The SAP Garden was conceived and planned as an ecological building from the outset. For example, the heat requirement is generated from the waste heat of the refrigeration machines, which significantly reduces energy consumption. The roof design and the construction of the building also play a decisive role in the eco-balance. The part of the building that is up to 20 metres below ground reacts sluggishly to temperature fluctuations. The ‘green’ roof of the SAP Gardens not only blends harmoniously into the surroundings of the Olympic Park, but also supports the inertia of the building.
Heinemann also contributes to ecological sustainability by installing energy-efficient LED lighting, carefully selecting products and suppliers, using presence detectors for automatic lighting control and using a rail system for the power supply that minimises energy losses and increases efficiency.

In addition, a photovoltaic system covering over 2,000 square metres was installed on the roof, which covers the energy requirements of an ice rink per year and significantly improves the energy balance. No fossil fuels are used throughout the building complex and only green electricity is used. Charging stations for electric vehicles and several hundred bicycle parking spaces are also available to visitors and athletes.
Economic sustainability in the SAP Garden
Thanks to its multifunctional use and long-term planning, the SAP Garden also focusses on economic sustainability. From 120 event days for ice hockey and basketball to major events and popular sports, the arena offers a wide range of uses that guarantee high capacity utilisation and efficient use of resources. Heinemann manages a comprehensive maintenance contract that ensures smooth day-to-day operations. The choice of durable products and reliable partners also promotes the sustainable utilisation of the arena. These measures ensure that the SAP Garden is not only operated in an ecologically sustainable manner, but also economically.

Social sustainability at SAP Garden
Social sustainability at SAP Garden is promoted through comprehensive youth development and social initiatives. The arena offers first-class training facilities for young athletes and serves as a meeting place for professionals and young talents.
The interplay of sustainable aspects plays a central role in the construction and operation of the sports arena. This is why the SAP Garden is not only a high-tech arena, but also a showcase project for the sustainable construction and operation of sports facilities.
