Finally home games again: We start with a double-header in the CHL// CHL-UPDATEExactly 138 days after our last home game, we finally start the new ice season in front of our home crowd this weekend. And that with a double-header in the European top division. We play Kosice on Friday and Innsbruck on Sunday.
With four points from the first two games, we got off to a successful start in the Champions League last weekend. After losing 4-3 in a penalty shootout to Vitkovice Ridera, the Red Bulls were convincing 2-0 winners at Czech champions Ocelari Trinec - including a shutout by our top-performing number 35 Mathias Niederberger.
With this basis, the first points are now to be scored in front of a home crowd. On Friday, the German champions will host HC Kosice at 7:30 p.m. at the Olympia Ice Stadium. Only two days later, on Sunday, CHL newcomer Innsbruck will be the guests of the Red Bulls (16:30). The first games were already characterized by enormous quality and physicality. The top division always offers top ice hockey.

A new mode is providing additional excitement this year. Instead of the previous 32 clubs, only 24 teams from twelve different nations are now competing for the Champions League title.
Instead of being divided into groups, each team will play six different teams in the preliminary round. All participants are listed in a table, from which the best 16 qualify for the round of 16. The top team in the table meets the 16th in the rankings, the second the 15th, and so on.

Three major rule adjustments in the CHL.
Another incentive: for the first time, the new CHL rules will also be applied in our stadium. Change 1: Minor penalties are treated the same as major penalties. In other words, a team that has caused a minor penalty will remain shorthanded, even if the opposing team scores a goal. In any case, the penalty will last for the entire period. Only exception, change 3 comes into effect. Change 2: Indicated penalties will always be enforced and served even if the team in numerical superiority scores a goal. Change 3: A shorthanded goal erases a minor penalty in progress. If a team manages to score a shorthanded goal, it will be rewarded with the cancellation of the remaining penalty time for the player with the shortest time remaining in the penalty box. "I think the new rules are exciting. There are opportunities to score more goals from this. My first impressions are that they definitely bring a new element to the game," says our coach Toni Söderholm.
