Course of the match
High tempo, tough duels and dangerous scoring chances - the duel between the two top teams got straight down to business. Mannheim were initially more dominant. The result of the storming start was John Gilmour's opening goal (9'). The Adler then continued to create a lot of action in front of Mathias Niederberger's goal before Munich became more offensive. It was precisely in this phase that the Adler struck coldly: Luke Esposito completed a 2-on-1 counterattack to make it 2:0 (20') 16 seconds before the break.
The intensity continued in the second period. The Red Bulls adapted better to Mannheim's aggressive forecheck, but the Adler still created further top-class chances. Marc Michaelis capitalized on one of them to make it 3:0 (26'). The goal was also the start of a wild sequence with two more goals, as Ehliz reduced the deficit in the same minute. Just 20 seconds later, the Adler were celebrating again. Maximilian Heim made it 4:1 (26'). Both teams then took a short breather without neglecting their offense. Munich pressed vehemently for the second goal in the final phase of the third period with the superior numbers, but nothing changed before the second break.
The Red Bulls took the initiative in the final 20 minutes, but Mannheim continued to defend consistently and survived Munich's next powerful powerplay unscathed. The three-goal lead lasted into the final period. With just under five minutes remaining, Kaltenhauser took full risk, but even with a sixth field player, the Adler defense could no longer be defeated. It remained 1:4 for the four-time German champions.
