Few goals in direct comparison
There were only a few goals to be seen in the first duel between the two teams this season, partly because both goalkeepers Mathias Niederberger and ex-Munich native Henrik Haukeland made several strong saves.
This continued a trend that began in February 2023. Since then, only 23 goals have been scored in six meetings, i.e. less than four goals on average. In four of these six close duels, our boys had the better end for themselves.
Reunion with McKiernan
Another old acquaintance will be looking to prevent a Munich victory on Sunday. Ryan McKiernan has been playing for the Rhinelanders with a German passport since last week. The 35-year-old already played for DEG in the 2018/19 season and McKiernan made his debut in Augsburg on Friday.
In the past two seasons, the right-shooter defended for the Red Bulls, and in 2023 the veteran was an important factor in our championship-winning team.
DEG in the relegation battle
In Düsseldorf, the returnee is now set to become an important factor in the race to avoid relegation. Tenth place is already a long way off, and only a real winning streak could push DEG towards the play-off places. At the moment, coach Steven Reinprecht's team is more concerned with getting out of last place in the table. To achieve this, the offense in particular needs to get going.
Former Mannheim striker Tyler Gaudet, who moved to the Rhineland in mid-October, has proven to be a real boost so far. In the penultimate home game against Frankfurt (4:3 win), the Canadian was involved in all four goals. Top scorer is once again Brendan O'Donnell (eight goals, ten assists), Alexander Blank has seven goals.
