Both teams gave each other nothing and kept the duels close to the limit. Penalties were the result - and the special teams made the difference in favour of the Polar Bears in the first period: Frederik Tiffels deflected a shot with one more player on the ice to make it 0:1 (5th). With Munich outnumbered, the visitors had three top chances, but Mathias Niederberger shone in goal and initially prevented the Berliners from scoring a second goal. Kai Wissmann scored in the 19th minute - shortly after Munich had survived a double shorthanded spell unscathed. The team went into the first break with a 2-0 lead.
The fans were presented with a similar picture in the middle period: both teams worked aggressively and the special teams were also allowed to continue to present themselves. The Red Bulls took full advantage of a 5-on-3 overtime situation: DeSousa unpacked the hammer - just 1:2 (25'). A few seconds later, Polar Bears goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand made a remarkable save to prevent the equalizer. Munich pressed, but the Polar Bears were ice-cold. Tiffels made it 1:3 (28'). The Red Bulls took control in the final period, while Berlin waited for counter-attacks. Yannick Veilleux completed one of them to make it 1:5 (45'). Munich continued to try everything - and were rewarded with Hager's powerplay goal to make it 2:5 (51'). The Polar Bears under pressure. Four minutes before the end, coach Toni Söderholm brought on an extra outfield player - but Berlin's Julian Melchiori scored into the empty net (58'). But it was still not over. Parkes scored a few seconds before the siren to make it 3:6.
