Course of the game
Speed, toughness and three goals - the first period was already a real battle. The difference was made by the overtime units: While Bremerhaven despaired of Mathias Niederberger in their only powerplay, the Red Bulls struck three times. Eisenschmid scored the opening goal after a beautiful solo run (9th). In the 15th minute, the visitors then conceded a major penalty for a board check - and Munich exploited this mercilessly. Ortega scored first (17') before DeSousa followed up with a powerful strike to make it 3:0 (19').
Bremerhaven started the middle period full of pressure and were rewarded: Christian Wejse reduced the deficit to 1:3 after a counter-attack (25'). A short time later it was even possible to tie the scores, but Niederberger denied Jan Urbas (26). The Red Bulls then invested more in attack again. An open exchange of blows developed with two more goals: Oswald scored for Munich (35') and Dominik Uher in the powerplay for the Penguins (37'). The Red Bulls went into the second break with a 4:2 lead.
Munich actively defended their two-goal lead after the final change of ends. At the other end, the Penguins lacked the ideas to build up pressure. And when the visitors did get a chance to score - as they did in the final period with the extra skater - Niederberger was the last man standing. So the Red Bulls held on for a deserved 4:2 win.
