Course of the game
From the first face-off, both teams set a high tempo on the ice and fought intense duels. However, it was not really dangerous in front of goal at first. Yasin Ehliz (9th) and Patrick Hager (11th) had the first top chances, but Penguins goalkeeper Kristers Gudlevskis was on the spot in both cases. Because Munich's Mathias Niederberger also kept everything that came into his box, the controversial first period ended without a goal.
The middle period started with one good chance for each team. After that, the defensive lines did a great job again and kept things tight. A passionate match ensued on the ice, with the score on the scoreboard remaining level twice. Until DeSousa broke the spell: after Dominik Bittner's blocked attempt from distance, he put the follow-up shot into the Bremerhaven goal to make it 1:0 for the Red Bulls (33'). And Munich followed up. Immediately after a short-handed game, Eisenschmid scored the second goal for the champions (37), who went into the second period break with a 2:0 lead.
The Penguins tried to close the gap, but Munich did not concede much in the final period and came very close to making it 3-0 in the 49th minute, but the score remained the same after video evidence. It did not change until 2:54 minutes before the end: Bremerhaven had taken the goalkeeper off the ice and Miha Verlic made it 1-2. Now the intense game became dramatic. The shots kept coming at Niederberger's goal until Munich were able to celebrate a 2:1 victory.
