Course of the match
Both teams started the match in an attacking mood. However, there were only a few chances at first. Duels characterized the action for a long time. Over the course of the first period, Munich combined more and more powerfully. However, Frankfurt defended with concentration, counter-attacked - and scored the first goal of the match. Joseph Cramarossa gave the Hessians the lead in the 14th minute and made it 1:0 at the break.
The first few minutes of the middle period belonged to Munich with a double chance from Yasin Ehliz and Andreas Eder (22'), a spectacular run by Ehliz (24') and the equalizer: Ortega beat three Frankfurt players to put the ball in the short corner of the Löwen goal (27') to make it 1:1. The Red Bulls now had their momentum in the middle third and piled on the pressure. The result: McKiernan made it 2:1 in the 30th minute. Frankfurt then fought back more intensively, but Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger made brilliant saves on all of the visitors' chances. Red Bull Munich went into the second break with a 2:1 lead.
The final period began with Munich in the ascendancy and plenty of work for Frankfurt goalkeeper Joseph Cannata. The Red Bulls continued to control the glass, the game and their opponents in the following minutes. And when the visitors got dangerously close to goal, they failed to beat Niederberger. One minute before the end, the Lions then took the keeper off the ice after surviving being short-handed. But it was no longer enough to equalize. Munich celebrated their third win in a row in the new year.
