Course of the game
Mannheim got off to the better start, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute through Kristian Reichel. The visitors remained dangerous after that, but the Red Bulls also created good opportunities. Maximilian Kastner (8th minute) and Tobias Rieder (12th minute) had chances to equalize, but München did not score in the first period. Since Nick Cicek prevented the second Adler goal with a shot on the other side of the post (16'), the visitors went into the first break with a narrow 1-0 lead.
In the middle third, both teams initially played in a controlled manner, so scoring chances were in short supply. The only real chance was a breakaway by Mannheim, which Marc Michaelis converted to make it 2:0 (28'). Shortly afterwards, Arno Tiefensee on the other side defused a penalty by Chris DeSousa (30'). The Jackson team then increasingly increased the pressure. Adler goalie Tiefensee made some strong saves and was lucky in the 38th minute when Yasin Ehliz only hit the post. The visitors went in at the second interval two goals down.
The Red Bulls continued to push forward in the final period. The goal was within touching distance, but the Adler's defense remained rock-solid. The crossbar saved Les Lancaster's shot for the second time that night. It was only a matter of time, but Munich were running out of time. With four minutes left on the clock, Jackson put the extra attacker on the pitch – and the risk paid off: Eder cut the deficit to 1:2 with a shot under the crossbar (59). The Red Bulls then tried everything, but despite creating further chances, they were unable to equalize.
