Match report
In an intense first period, the Red Bulls upped the pace after four minutes. Adam Brooks opened the period with a great chance, but Arno Tiefensee was on hand to save. A few seconds later, the Adler keeper was beaten. Varejcka, with an assist from Jonathon Blum, scored an unstoppable goal to make it 1-0 in the 5. minute. The special teams then had the opportunity to show themselves. Mannheim initially sent their powerplay unit onto the ice – and John Gilmour equalized to make it 1:1 (9.). Shortly afterwards, the Red Bulls pushed for the lead again with manpower advantage. Ehliz had the best chance (12.) of several very good opportunities, but Tiefensee made a spectacular save – and not just in this sequence. Evan Fitzpatrick made a strong save, and the teams went in at the first intermission tied at 1-1.
The Red Bulls were enthusiastic and purposeful in the second period and created numerous scoring chances. Krämmer capitalized on one of them, tapping the rebound after Chris DeSousa hit the post to make it 2-1 in the 23. minute. In the following, the in-form Tiefensee prevented München from scoring a third goal – among other things with a brilliant save against Varejcka (25.). The Adler created their first noteworthy offensive action in the 33. minute, but Fitzpatrick was wide awake against Markus Hännikäinen (33.). Mannheim then stepped up a gear and had a huge chance to equalize with one second of the second period left on the clock, but Kris Bennett shot over the bar from close range.
The Adler turned the game around in the final period. First, Matthias Plachta scored on the power play (43. minute) after the Red Bulls had successfully defended for almost two minutes double short-handed. Just two minutes later, Bennett put Mannheim in front for the first time this evening. After the double strike, the home side defended consistently. München sought to exploit a gap in the defense – and succeeded in the 52. minute: Brooks converted Maximilian Kastner's impressive work to make it 3:3. After that, both teams wanted to win after 60 minutes, but another goal did not materialize in regular time.
Both teams played in a controlled manner in the overtime, but the fans still saw some good chances. The game-winning goal came in the second overtime period: Plachta scored to make it 4:3 for the Adler (86.) and give Mannheim a 3:2 lead in the best-of-seven series.
