Course of the game
Right from the start, both teams went forward and were uncompromising in defense. The result: an even, physically intense duel in which the big chances initially failed to materialize. Then Bremerhaven made it 1:0: Colt Conrad put the disc in front of the goal and it was deflected by a skate and trickled over the line (14th). Munich then looked for the right answer. The German champions put the Penguins under pressure in the final minutes of the first period. However, the Red Bulls failed to score and the period ended with a 1:0 lead for the visitors.
The second period started with plenty of penalties on both sides. First, Trevor Parkes had a top opportunity in these minutes while short-handed and found his master in Bremerhaven goalie Kristers Gudlevskis (25'). On the counter-attack, Miha Verlic made it 2:0 for the main round winners (26). In response to the goal against, Munich upped the tempo, fought for the equalizer and were rewarded in the 34th minute with Eisenschmid's goal after a great combination to make it 1-2. And just 199 seconds later, the Red Bulls equalized: Daubner put the puck in the Penguins' goal after preparatory work by Koni Abeltshauser (37'). The score remained the same after 40 minutes.
Coach Toni Söderholm's team repeatedly put pressure on Gudlevskis in the final period, who made one save against Daubner (44'). Bremerhaven were always dangerous on the counter-attack. But Mathias Niederberger in the Munich box was always on the alert. A late shot from Yasin Ehliz landed on the post (58'), meaning the score was 2:2 after regulation time. Overtime followed.
Both teams had good opportunities in extra time. It took until the 74th minute before Phillip Bruggisser decided the match for Bremerhaven with his 3:2 winning goal.
