Smith deflected a shot from Yasin Ehliz unstoppable in the second minute to give Munich a top start. However, the guests came back in the opening period through Alec McCrea (6th). Mathias Niederberger was blocked from view. The Red Bulls' goalkeeper took center stage as Düsseldorf consistently finished its attacks. In the tenth minute, Victor Svensson made it 2-1 for the Rhinelanders with a solo effort. Shortly before the break, Jakub Borzecki even added the 3:1 (17th).
The DEG defense remained compact in the middle period. Rarely did the Munich team have such a free shot as DeSousa, who was unable to beat Henrik Haukeland (24). Joonas Järvinen was more accurate and shot into the corner in the 29th minute to increase the lead to 4:1.
After an even start in the final period, the Red Bulls increased the tempo. Haukeland in the spotlight and with good actions, but he could not prevent the goal to 2:4 by DeSousa (45th). Munich kept up the pressure and was close to the next goal, but then conceded a penalty. Düsseldorf used the power play to score 5:2 through Stephen MacAulay (51.). However, the top team did not give up yet. Redmond (55.) and Ortega (56.) brought the hosts back to 4:5 with a double strike within 34 seconds, but the equalizer was not to come.
