Course of the game
Right from the first face-off, the Red Bulls went into forward gear and repeatedly appeared dangerous in front of DEG goalie Henrik Haukeland. Düsseldorf rarely had any good attacks against Munich's aggressive forechecking. But because Haukeland also thwarted the German champions' best chances, such as Filip Varejcka's solo effort (15th), the teams went into the first break goalless after a one-sided 20 minutes.
That changed quickly in the middle period: After just 33 seconds, Parkes overcame Haukeland to give Munich a well-deserved lead (21'). The Red Bulls then created further chances, but the goals came from the other side. First, Brendan O'Donnell appeared alone in front of Daniel Allavena in the 26th minute and gave the keeper no chance to defend. Shortly afterwards, Kenny Agostino put the hosts 2:1 ahead with a follow-up shot (30'). The game was now more even with chances on both sides. The teams went into the second break with the score at 2:1.
At the start of the final period, Agostino increased the lead to 3:1 for DEG with his second goal (44'). Munich braced themselves against the threat of defeat, but Düsseldorf held out and could rely on Haukeland. Two and a half minutes before the end of the game, coach Toni Söderholm brought a sixth outfield player onto the ice and the Red Bulls' pressure increased. But Düsseldorf held on for a 3:1 victory.
