Course of the game
The Red Bulls were rarely dangerous in front of the Ice Tigers' goal in the beginning. In the opening period, which was characterized by many duels, big chances were scarce on both sides. Nuremberg took advantage of one of the few opportunities in the 14th minute: Daniel Schmölz netted into the far corner to make it 1:0 for the hosts. Munich were more energetic after that, but still unsuccessful. As a result, the deficit remained narrow at the first break.
In the middle third, the Red Bulls pressed for the equalizer and repeatedly created top chances. However, the post (22nd, 33rd) and Nuremberg goalie Niklas Treutle prevented them from scoring. As the Ice Tigers also continued to go on the offensive, the two teams fought an intense duel with an open goal and significantly more chances than in the first 20 minutes. However, no goal was scored in this period, meaning that the score remained 1:0 in Nuremberg's favor at the second break.
It took just 50 seconds in the final period for Söderholm's team to celebrate: Oswald took advantage of an inattention in Nuremberg's defense to equalize (41st). A heated fight then ensued. The Red Bulls were denied by Treutle after a top attack (51'), the Ice Tigers hit the crossbar once in four minutes of overtime (57'). The home side did better shortly before the end: Evan Barratt chased the puck into the net 18 seconds before the siren to give Nuremberg a 2:1 victory.
