Course of the game
In a fast-paced opening period, Mirko Höfflin put the visitors ahead after a counter-attack (2nd). Ingolstadt continued to rely on quick counter-attacks, but the Red Bulls defended with concentration. Munich were the dominant team with the better chances, but Michael Garteig was the last man standing. The Panther goalkeeper thwarted top chances from Veit Oswald (4th) and Ben Smith (16th), among others. As the German champions were unable to take advantage of a five-minute spell of superior possession and Wojciech Stachowiak only hit the post (20), the score was 0:1 going into the first break.
The Red Bulls made an energetic start to the middle period, but Ingolstadt survived this phase of pressure without conceding a goal. The visitors then had their first powerplay in the 24th minute - but also failed to score. After that, the game was characterized by many duels and penalties. Both teams exerted pressure when outnumbered, but there was no getting past the strong goalkeepers Garteig and Mathias Niederberger.
In the final period, Smith was the first to equalize (42') before the visitors came close to scoring their second goal shortly afterwards. A back-and-forth until the Red Bulls shifted up a gear - and were rewarded for it: Ehliz scored with a shot into the corner to make it 1:1 (49'). Munich now wanted more, but no further goal was scored in normal time.
Both teams played forward in extra time. The decision was then made in the 64th minute: DeSousa hammered an onetimer into the net to secure the extra point for the Red Bulls.
