Course of the game
The Red Bulls initially had a lot of time in the offensive zone, but apart from Andreas Eder's crossbar shot (1st), Straubing didn't allow much. It was a similar picture at the other end, as Munich defended very consistently. The first period was balanced for long stretches. The game was dominated by duels, but there were still few big chances after the opening period. The exception was Chris DeSousa's top chance (16'). As the Munich striker just missed, the teams went into the first break without a goal.
Both teams were also strong defensively in the middle period. However, Straubing failed to pay attention on one occasion - and the Red Bulls took advantage. Ehliz scored after a dream pass from Dominik Bittner to make it 1:0 (28'). The Tigers then invested more in attack, but there was no getting past Mathias Niederberger in the Red Bulls' goal. Despite chances on both sides, the score remained 1-0 after two periods.
In the final period, the Tigers wanted to equalize quickly, but coach Toni Söderholm's team held out and made pinpricks. Veit Oswald tested Hunter Miska, but the Tigers goalkeeper made a save, before Tyler Sheehy hit the crossbar at the other end (46'). Straubing did not let up and turned the game around within a few minutes with goals from Matt Bradley (47) and Michael Connolly (53). The Red Bulls tried everything once more in the final phase, but even with the extra outfield player, Miska could no longer be beaten.
