Course of the game
Both teams started the top game offensively and with a lot of speed, but the really big chances were initially lacking. Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger and his counterpart Jake Hildebrand were rarely seriously tested. Towards the end of the first period, the Polar Bears established themselves in Munich's third for longer, but the Red Bulls had the best opportunity up to that point. Austin Ortega failed to beat Hildebrand in the 18th minute, meaning the intense opening period ended 0-0.
The first few minutes of the middle period also remained goalless until Ty Ronning drove in alone on Niederberger and converted to make it 1:0 for the Polar Bears (27'). Berlin then had more chances, Munich relied on counter-attacks. Ehliz had the best chance for the Red Bulls in the 38th minute. However, he narrowly missed and the German champions were then unable to take advantage of an overtime situation, meaning they went into the second break with a narrow deficit.
The final period went back and forth. For the Red Bulls, first Ben Smith (50') and then Koni Abeltshauser missed alone in front of Hildebrand (53'). Coach Toni Söderholm's team increased the pressure and pushed for the equalizer - with success. In the 57th minute, Ehliz fired the puck directly into the Eisbären net. This was followed by extra time, in which both goalkeepers made excellent saves. The penalty shoot-out had to decide the game. It was Ronning again (65') who scored and secured Berlin the extra point.
