Course of the game
Munich and Wolfsburg went on the offensive right from the start. An open exchange of blows with many shots on goal was the result. It didn't take long for the first goal of the evening to be scored. In the fifth minute of the game, the Grizzlies were the first to celebrate as Justin Feser capitalized on a 2-on-0 situation. However, the Red Bulls replied exactly two minutes later: Kastner aimed right into the corner to equalize (7th). There were also chances on both sides after that, including a great chance for the visitors: Again, two Wolfsburg players appeared free in front of Mathias Niederberger, but this time the goalkeeper made a brilliant save (12'). The teams went into the first break at 1:1.
It was a similar picture in the middle period with two teams on an equal footing. But Niederberger continued to hold strong and his counterpart Dustin Strahlmeier could not be beaten at first either. The Grizzlys keeper then had to reach behind him for the second time when Munich were outnumbered: Yasin Ehliz played a pinpoint pass to Eder, who pushed the puck over the line (34'). The 2:1 was also the score after two periods.
Wolfsburg invested more in attack in the final period, but the Red Bulls defended cleverly. They kept the visitors away from their own goal until the final period. It was only when Grizzlys coach Mike Stewart took full risk and brought on a sixth outfield player (58') that Munich had to tremble. But the strong defense around goalkeeper Niederberger saved the narrow lead.
