Course of the game
In the 1st minute, the Red Bulls had their first overtime. They immediately created chances, but Augsburg held firm - and soon did better than Munich: First T.J. Trevelyan gave the Panthers a 1:0 lead at 5-on-4 (5th), shortly afterwards Anrei Hakulinen made it 2:0 (8th). The champions' response? Blum made it 1-2 shortly afterwards (10). But five minutes later, AEV were back in front by two goals as Matthew Puempel slid in at the far post to make it 3:1. That was the end of a turbulent first period.
Munich also had a powerplay opportunity early on in the middle period, but were again unable to capitalize. Instead, the Red Bulls struck in the 30th minute. Patrick Hager took the disc directly, DeSousa deflected and it was only 2:3. The game then went back and forth, with both teams getting their chances. However, there were no more goals and the score at the second break was 3:2 for Augsburg.
Turning the tide - that was the objective of coach Toni Söderholm's team going into the final period. Munich played with corresponding energy and equalized through Parkes after Ben Street had won the disc (44'). Augsburg continued to focus on defense and rare counter-attacks after the goal. And they were successful: Chris Collins scored the 4:3 winner for the Panthers (59') as Munich's pressure increased from minute to minute.
