Course of the match
Toughness, speed and plenty of goal scenes - the top game lived up to its name right from the start. Mannheim were initially slightly superior before the Red Bulls turned up the heat. Among other things, DeSousa slammed the puck against the crossbar (6th). The Adler's first top chance from Zachary Leslie was thwarted by Fitzpatrick (13). A few seconds later, the other side scored: Brooks tunneled Adler goalkeeper Arno Tiefensee to give Munich the lead (13). The duel now became even more intense, but despite several top chances, no further goals were scored before the first break.
After the break, the Red Bulls initially set the tone - and were rewarded for it. DeSousa increased the lead to 2:0 for Jackson's team in the 28th minute after a well-considered assist from Brooks. As Fitzpatrick continued to shine between the posts and Leon Gawanke only hit the crossbar with a hammer (35'), the Red Bulls survived a total of ten minutes short-handed in the middle period without any damage.
In the third period, Munich's defence consistently cleared the area in front of Fitzpatrick's goal, but the Red Bulls were also able to launch a number of attacks to relieve the pressure. The two-goal lead lasted into the final period. Just under four minutes before the siren, Eagles coach Dallas Eakins brought on an extra field player. Both teams hit the post in this phase, but the score remained unchanged.
