Major rule changes for the new CHL season
Wednesday, 31. May 2023 | Rule changes in the CHL for the 2023 2024 season
Major rule changes for the new CHL seasonThe three adjustments explained// CHL - CURRENTThe Champions League kicks off the new 2023/24 season on August 31. In addition to the adjustments to the draw for the preliminary round opponents, there will also be three major rule changes to the game itself this year.
There will be various changes in the CHL. These do not only concern the game mode and the opponent draw of the preliminary round, which already took place on May 24. With regard to outnumbered and shorthanded play, there will be three changes in the new season.
Change 1: Minor penalties will be treated the same as major penalties. In other words, a team that has caused a minor penalty will remain shorthanded, even if the opposing team scores a goal. In any case, the penalty will last for the entire period.
Change 2: Indicated penalties are always enforced and served even if the team in numerical superiority scores a goal.
Change 3: A shorthanded goal erases a minor penalty in progress. If a team succeeds in scoring a shorthanded goal, it will be rewarded with the cancellation of the remaining penalty time for the player with the shortest remaining time in the penalty box.

Red Bulls among others against Rauma and Karlstad
The Red Bulls will host Lukko Rauma (FIN), HC Innsbruck (AUT) and HC Kosice (SVK) in front of their home crowd in this year's CHL preliminary round. Away from home our boys will play against Oceláři Třinec (CZE), Färjestad Karlstad (SWE) and Vítkovice Ridera (CZE). The scheduling of the matches is still pending.
The opponents were already drawn on May 24 in a modified mode. Instead of the previous 32 clubs, only 24 teams from twelve different nations will now be competing for the title in Europe's premier league.
In the preliminary round (August 31 to October 18, 2023), all teams will then be listed in an overall table. Each team will play six matches against six different opponents (three home, three away), with the top 16 qualifying for the playoffs. These remain unchanged.
