This was the result of the draw on the sidelines of the Ice Hockey World Championship on Wednesday afternoon in Tampere, Finland. The new season in Europe's premier league starts on August 31 this year, with the final taking place on February 20, 2024. In addition to the Red Bulls, runners-up ERC Ingolstadt and Adler Mannheim will compete from the PENNY DEL.
The Munich team will host Lukko Rauma (FIN), HC Innsbruck (AUT) and HC Kosice (SVK) in front of their home crowd. Away from home, the 2019 CHL finalists will face Oceláři Třinec (CZE), Färjestad Karlstad (SWE) and Vítkovice Ridera (CZE). The CHL is expected to announce the exact match dates in two weeks.
Söderholm: "Six highly interesting games"
Toni Söderholm, coach EHC Red Bull Munich: "For us, there are six highly interesting games with very different styles of play on the program in the preliminary round. Among others, we will play the current champions from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. With Färjestad, we're also up against a team with a very strong skating and excellent technical skills. The game against Innsbruck is almost like a small derby, which our fans are certainly looking forward to. And with Lukko Rauma, an opponent awaits us who played a strong main round in Finland last season."
In November of last year, the Champions League decided on a change of mode. Instead of the previous 32 clubs, only 24 top teams from twelve different nations now compete for the title in Europe's premier league. In the preliminary round (August 31 to October 18), all teams will then be listed in an overall table. Each team plays six games against six different opponents (three home, three away), and the top 16 qualify for the playoffs.
Red Bulls best CHL representative from Germany
In the knockout round, everything remains as usual. As before, the playoffs will be played in eighth, quarter and semifinals (November 14 to January 17) with first and second legs. The final on February 20 will also be decided in one game, as before.
The Red Bulls have qualified for the Champions League for the ninth time in a row. In the eternal table, the Munich-based team is by far the best representative from the German Ice Hockey League. Among a total of 100 teams, the Red Bulls are in fourth position. The biggest success so far was the participation in the final in 2019.
