Match report
In a heated opening phase, the Red Bulls kept their cool. Eisenschmid crowned a fine solo effort with the 1-0 after 54 seconds. The assist came from record scorer Hager. Mannheim looked for a quick reply, but the visitors scored again – with their second shot on goal: Ehliz increased the lead to 2-0 in the power play (6. minute). The Adler then increased the pressure on Evan Fitzpatrick's goal. Ryan MacInnis hit the crossbar on the power play (8. minute) before Fitzpatrick was beaten for the first time in the 14. minute after Tom Kühnhackl's tap-in. But Jackson's team had the last word in the first period: DeSousa's 16.-minute goal gave München a 3-1 lead.
In the second period, the Red Bulls focused on good structure – with success. The Adler did not create any big chances in the entire period. On the other hand, München looked dangerous in almost every offensive action. In the 35. minute, the four-time German champions struck again: Ehliz finished a dream combination with his goal to make it 4-1. The teams went in at the second intermission with this result.
After a major penalty against Mannheim, the Red Bulls started the final period with a five-minute power play. The power play formations delivered again when Rieder converted a dream pass from Taro Hirose to make it 5-1 (42.). The Adler reacted with toughness to the high deficit, while München held firm. The referees handed out a lot of penalties on both sides. In the final phase, emotions cooled down again. Mannheim cut the deficit to 2:5 (56.) through Leon Gawanke in a powerplay, but the Red Bulls' first away win in Mannheim since February 18, 2020 was out of danger.
